Cedar Crest Students Plan Intergenerational Festivities for Cedar Haven Residents

Cedar Crest Students Plan Intergenerational Festivities for Cedar Haven Residents

This is the part of a new series of posts showing how residents #EnjoyLifeWithUs at Cedar Haven Healthcare Center. Ray Truex’s Cedar Crest Middle School Class makes regular visits to Cedar Haven to share activities and festivities with our residents (Ray’s photos above were used with his permission).

This week the CCMS students brought St. Patrick’s Day crafts and cookie decoration supplies to treat our residents to some springtime fun. Learn more as their teacher, Ray, answers a few questions about the class’s involvement at Cedar Haven:

Q: What inspired your class to start regularly visiting the residents at Cedar Haven?

Ray: “We started coming 4 or 5 years ago. I wanted to get the kids out of the building to go make an impact in our community, and while we do a lot of good inside of CCMS for charities, I wanted our kids on a van, interacting with others. My Falcons Care group brainstormed several ideas, and this was the one we chose. Concurrently, I had a friend who was a resident at another facility, and my visits to him prompted me to throw this idea out to the class. Fortunately, it was the one the class chose! We have averaged 5 or 6 visits a year for the past 5 years.”

Q: What have been your favorite activities thus far?

Ray: “While playing games has been an easy activity that allows the kids to get to know the residents, my favorite activities have been the ones where kids actually design the trip’s activities, do prep work, and lead once we arrive. We had two girls lead a trip in December, pre-plan the arts and crafts then lead the activities once we arrived. I was so proud of how they saw it through, start to finish! Our goal is to have kids lead the remainder of our visits.”

Q: What have you learned from the residents or enjoyed through your interactions with them?

Ray: “I would say that this experience has challenged the kids to step outside of their comfort zone and really see someone else’s world. We look for the glimmer of happiness in resident’s eyes as we interact with them, and the feeling of knowing that they brought joy to someone else’s day has had a lasting impact on the kids. Given the right outlets, kids can amaze you, and I always see sides of kids who I would have never expected. I’ve had parent phone calls, telling me how a daughter couldn’t stop talking about the fun they had at Cedar Haven; I’ve seen kids have a conversation with someone who doesn’t talk back, and get a hug at the end because the conversation was so meaningful; I’ve had kids say they are now considering going into nursing. I have kids routinely asking when the next visit will be. It has been a fantastic experience for all of us, and I hope it has been equally beneficial for your residents!”

On behalf of all of our residents and all of us at Cedar Haven, we would like to say thank you to this thoughtful group of students and their teacher for taking the time and effort to bring such vitality and enjoyment to our residents. While we have many activities at our facility for our residents to choose from each week, an inter-generational event led by compassionate students is such a treat. We all look forward to each time you come to visit. Thank you and happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Honoring our own World War II Hero

Honoring our own World War II Hero

On February 22, 2019, Richard J. Kerkeslager was honored at Cedar Haven for his service in World War II between 1942 and 1946. Richard served in the 407th infantry and was awarded the Bronze Star medal for bravery.

As his commendation read, Richard earned his medal “in part by serving as a scout for the battalion intelligence section (and) manned a rifle company observation post during the enemy attack against enemy fortifications.” His original commendation goes on to say that “when a battalion wireman attached to his group became an early casualty, he braved the fire many times to crawl over open ground in order to effect vital repairs.”

Representative Russ Diamond and Marie Tribioli from Senator Folmer’s office came to Cedar Haven to present Richard with a certification to “Salute Pennsylvania’s World War II Hero.”

As the certificate reads, “Let us never forget those sacrifices and keep alive the legacy of your generation. Only through the dedication and heroism exhibited by you and your comrades do we remain a free country. Although this certificate could never embody the amount of gratitude you deserve, on behalf of the citizens of this great Commonwealth, we in the Pennsylvania General Assembly thank you.”

Thank you to Susan Shapiro, News Anchor at WGAL News 8, for covering Richard’s story and for her Facebook post honoring his service:

Richard is one of 16 million Americans who served in the military during World War II. We are all thankful for the opportunity to formally honor Richard and thank him for his service. Please join us in thanking Richard and recognizing the personal sacrifices that he and so many others made to protect our country. The other residents and staff greatly enjoyed attending the event and celebrating our own World War II hero.

“Great Mom”: Sylvia “loved everybody and was loved by all” at Cedar Haven

“Great Mom”: Sylvia “loved everybody and was loved by all” at Cedar Haven

Born and raised in Lebanon, Sylvia was a resident at Cedar Haven Healthcare Center for just over two years. Her son, Nick, recently ordered a plaque for her and had it installed at Cedar Haven in memory of his mother. The plaque reads “Great Mom” and is placed outside the facility where Sylvia “loved everybody— staff and residents.” Here she is pictured on the right, while enjoying time with a friend in the Cedar Haven dining room:

“Of course my mom loved to talk to people, she was 100% Italian,” Nick recently explained as he recalled her time at Cedar Haven. “She loved talking to the Cedar Haven staff and they grew to love her, too. She loved Bingo, going on trips, and all the activities.”

Nick was fortunate enough to work close to the facility, making it possible for him to eat lunch with his mother almost every day.

Nick had some very positive things to say about the care and service that his family experienced at Cedar Haven over the past two years. “Nursing staff members like Deb and Melissa were awesome,” he explained. “The finance office was awesome. You guys have been great—really caring and understanding.”

Our staff’s condolences and best wishes are with Nick and the rest of Sylvia’s family. It was a privilege to have her smiling face at the facility and we will remember her every time we see her plaque on the way into the building. We’re so thankful that she enjoyed our activities and daily interaction with our staff. From all of us at Cedar Haven, we hope your cherished memories bring you peace as you remember your “Great Mom.” Nick, please continue to stop by to say hi!

“Instant Friends” – #EnjoyLifeWithUs

This is the first in a new series of posts introducing friends who #EnjoyLifeWithUs at Cedar Haven Healthcare Center. Mafalda and Diane enjoy the uniquely fun activity and event offerings that are a way of life at Cedar Haven:

Cedar Haven Healthcare Center, a skilled nursing facility in Lebanon, provides high-quality care in a friendly and engaging atmosphere. Cedar Haven is a premier choice for skilled nursing, short-term rehab, and memory care in Central Pennsylvania. We are known for the high-quality care we provide, our successful outcomes, and the unique quality-of-life benefits that we offer our residents. For example, up to 100 fun activities are offered for our residents each month. Therefore, many of our residents have made meaningful friendships and relationships at Cedar Haven while participating in our social events.

From Roommates to “Instant Friends”

Mafalda and Diane were instant friends when they met at Cedar Haven.  The two women were introduced when Diane moved into Mafalda’s room and they have been inseparable ever since.  They can be found at most of the activities offered at Cedar Haven but their favorites are bocce ball and bowling.  Mafalda and Diane recently participated in a fun activities trip to the Twin Kiss in Myerstown, PA.

Diane said that their friendship works because “we never get mad at each other”. Mafalda is thankful that she found a friend who can help her with things she is not able to do on her own, like riding the elevator or shopping at the Cedar Haven gift shop.

Diane and Mafalda have many friends at Cedar Haven with whom they enjoy playing games and reminiscing about earlier days.  They are both thankful for the activities and the Cedar Haven staff.

These ladies are just two examples of residents whose lives have been positively impacted by the friendships they’ve made at Cedar Haven. Take a look at our current event calendar to view the activity offerings at Cedar Haven this month and contact us with questions or if you would like a tour of our facility.

Thank you for visiting our blog. Please check back for more resident spotlights featuring friends in the coming weeks!
