Short-term Therapy Success Spotlight: Meet Evelyn

Short-term Therapy Success Spotlight: Meet Evelyn

“My Husband called Cedar Haven and there was a spot for me. I had the very best of everything there. I would highly recommend Cedar Haven to anyone.”

-Evelyn, Cedar Haven Short-term Therapy Graduate

Today we would like to introduce you to one of the successful “graduates” of our short-term therapy services at Cedar Haven Healthcare Center. Evelyn was admitted to Cedar Haven last November after having major surgery and spending a month at a local hospital. Once she was ready to leave the hospital, she needed rehabilitation. When asked about her admission to Cedar Haven, Evelyn explained the following: “My Husband called Cedar Haven and there was a spot for me. I had the very best of everything there. I would highly recommend Cedar Haven to anyone.”

Cedar Haven’s Therapy Department: Therapeutic Success After Surgery

Evelyn shared that though she missed home after her surgery, she really needed assistance getting back her strength. “I couldn’t even lift my arm up over my head when I left the hospital,” Evelyn recalled. “They started small in Physical Therapy with me and now I’m able to do so much more. Cedar Haven has the best Physical Therapy department that I can imagine.”

Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy

Like many of our residents, Evelyn received both Physical and Occupational Therapy services during her stay at Cedar Haven. Speech Therapy is also offered at Cedar Haven.

“Trace, Laurie, Bruce, and everybody else in the physical therapy department were all fantastic,” Evelyn shared. “My Occupational Therapists were wonderful, too. Nothing but the best. I couldn’t be more grateful for everything they’ve done for me.”

Choose a facility with a low rehospitalization rate

In March and April of 2017, Cedar Haven’s rehospitalization rate (the rate at which our residents go back to the hospital within their first 30 days at our facility) was under 6%, which is dramatically lower than the 18% national average. Call our Admissions department at (717) 274-0421 to learn more about our short-term therapy department and to make plans for your admission to Cedar Haven following an upcoming hospital stay.

Please also join us in congratulating Evelyn and her team of therapists at Cedar Haven on another successful recovery!

Congratulations to the Happy Couple: Meet Denis and Joann

“…she likes to call him honey and he likes to call her sweet pea. All of us at Cedar Haven wish them sincere congratulations and many happy years together!”

This is the third post in a new resident spotlight series.

The Proposal: Simple and Sweet

Denis and Joann met here at Cedar Haven and started talking with one another in the main dining room.  It was a simple proposal when Denis ask Joann to marry him, and she said yes! Denis’ family took the couple out shopping and Joann was able to pick out her engagement ring and then also her wedding ring.

Wedding Bells at Cedar Haven

Denis and Joann said “I Do” and became husband and wife in Cedar Haven’s chapel last September. They were joined by 55 family and friends, with Denis’ brother serving as his best man and Joann’s close friend by her side as her maid of honor.

The reception was held in the Recreation Room at Cedar Haven. The Culinary Services Group catered the event with a wonderful meal and delicious cake! The cake was marble with purple icing decorated with edible purple orchids and pearls.

Denis and Joann shared that she likes to call him honey and he likes to call her sweet pea. All of us at Cedar Haven wish them sincere congratulations and many happy years together!

Happy Valentine’s Day – Meet Earl and Josie

Happy Valentine’s Day – Meet Earl and Josie

“We met in the main dining room at Cedar Haven… I took a liking to her right away and offered to buy her a cup of coffee.” The rest was history!

This is the second post in a new resident spotlight series.

Our residents have lots of opportunities to make new memories and enjoy life with friends at Cedar Haven. While fun events take place within our walls every day, it’s hard to beat a wedding. There are several couples who have met and married at Cedar Haven over the last fifty years. What better time is there than Valentine’s day to share the story of Earl and Josie, who met and married at Cedar Haven!

How They Met

Earl and Josie met in the main dining room at Cedar Haven. Earl noted that, “I had been here a little over a year and Josie had been here 3 weeks. I took a liking to her right away and offered to buy her a cup of coffee.” The dining room was a great location for them to continue spending time together over food and coffee as they got to know one another.

A Cedar Haven Wedding

Earl and Josie were in the Cedar Haven chapel. Describing the wedding, Earl said that “It was very nice. There were 77 attendees.”

“We had two ministers officiating, one representing each of our religions,” noted Josie.

After the wedding, they enjoyed a reception in the Cedar Haven Recreation Room. Over 200 well-wishers joined in the celebration. “We had cake, finger foods, and spent time with our guests,” remembers Josie.

Josie and Earl are pictured above in front of a tree decorated for Valentine’s Day at Cedar Haven. Earl and Josie continue to enjoy spending every day with one another at their side. “We like watching TV in the room we share together and we still get coffee together on a daily basis,” said Earl. “We go to church and mass together and visit with mutual friends in the main dining room,” shared Josie.

Here’s to many more Valentine’s Day celebrations for this sweet couple! From all of your friends at Cedar Haven: We’re so happy that you found each other.

Romance through the Ages: Meet Toney and Violet

Romance through the Ages: Meet Toney and Violet

Toney and Violet dated for about a year and then, like a true romantic, he proposed on Valentine’s Day—which was also Violet’s birthday. When Toney tells the story, he explains that he picked up a box of chocolate in the shape of a heart and replaced the center piece of chocolate with a diamond engagement ring. They married that summer.

This is the first post in a new resident spotlight series.

Meet Toney and Violet, a sweet married couple who we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know at Cedar Haven Healthcare Center.

How They Met

Every great love story has to start somewhere. Toney and Violet met through her aunt. Toney told us that he used to visit a racetrack for fun. One day at the track, he met Violet’s aunt, who told him she wanted him to meet her niece. Violet’s aunt then brought Violet to the racetrack to meet Toney and the couple started dating soon after.

A Valentine’s Day Surprise

Toney and Violet dated for about a year and then, like a true romantic, he proposed on Valentine’s Day—which was also Violet’s birthday. When Toney tells the story, he explains that he picked up a box of chocolate in the shape of a heart and replaced the center piece of chocolate with a diamond engagement ring. They married that summer.

Happily Ever After

This year, Toney eand Violet will be celebrating their 61st anniversary! They went on to have three children: David, Anita, and Rebecca. They currently have 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Both Toney and his wife attended the Mary Gate of Heaven Catholic Church. Tony was a short-term resident at Cedar Haven and graduated from our Therapy program last week. He plans to continue to visit his wife at Cedar Haven as often as he can.

Tony and Violet have shared their “love story” with many of the staff members at Cedar Haven. We have all enjoyed getting to know the couple and wanted to share their sweet story with you! Please join us in congratulating Toney and Violet on their 61st anniversary!

We are very interested in the lives of our residents and the contributions they have made to our community. It is amazing what we learn about our residents and their lives when we get to know them at Cedar Haven! We would love to share their stories this year for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Veteran’s Day. If you are interested in honoring your family member with a Resident Spotlight in the Intercom and on our website, please send a paragraph and a photograph describing their great story or why they are a fantastic mother, father, or veteran to mtroain@cedarhaven.healthcare or drop it off for Marrissa Troain at the Front Desk.

98-year-old Luella’s Surprise Holiday Party!

98-year-old Luella’s Surprise Holiday Party!

“We know that she has had such an impact in the lives of so many over her lifetime and we just wanted to get together to show her how much she means to all of us.”

Sherrie Davis

Luella's Granddaughter

Last weekend one of our residents, 98-year-old Luella Mathews, was pleasantly surprised with a holiday get-together which her family organized for her at Cedar Haven. 17 people who were in either her Sunday School class or in her Cherub Choir at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church attended along with family members and friends.

They treated her to songs from her Cherub Choir days along with Christmas songs. Luella sang along on many of the songs. Afterward, everyone enjoyed cookies and punch. Her granddaughter, Sherrie Davis, decided to reach out to past members of her Sunday School and Cherub Choir which she taught for over 50 years at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. She also contacted people who knew Luella from Cub Scouts where she was a Den Mother and the LAA playground which she helped to run for over 30 years.

Sherrie said, “We know that she has had such an impact in the lives of so many over her lifetime and we just wanted to get together to show her how much she means to all of us. She has also been receiving many Christmas cards every day from people who could not attend the event. We want to thank Cedar Haven for making this possible.”

We are delighted that Luella enjoyed her surprise holiday party! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of our residents and their dear families and friends!
