Did you know that 42% of nursing home residents in the US are 85 years old and over, 28% are between 75 and 84, 10% are between 65 and 74, and 7% are under 65? (1) Each person’s situation is unique and every transition is different.
Often family members are involved in researching, selecting, and transitioning their loved ones into a care facility. Depending on the circumstances and health conditions, these transitions may be stressful. Some people may need medical care but have concerns about transitioning into a facility. Those who are considering care may want to know… how will I get to my appointments? Will I be able to see my friends and family? What would the food be like?
We have some recommendations about how to prepare for and start these conversations. We want you to know:
- How to prepare
- How and when to start the conversation
- The most important questions and concerns to bring up with our loved ones
- Mistakes to avoid
That’s why we created a downloadable resource to help answer these questions. If you need more assistance, we have a social services department that can help with these transitions.
